06:39 pm - Preparing for fiscal safe mode, and an incident at UW involving a printout and scan
I'm not in a state of desperation, but I'm going to go ahead and slip into fiscal safe mode. Today at QFC, I bought the following:

- 6 lean pork steaks
- A bag of mini carrots
- 12 frozen turkey burgers
- 6 frozen bean burritos
- 6 sausage patties
- 6 golden apples
- Liquid egg whites
- 15 pack of instant oatmeal
- A box of 80 British blend tea bags
- A new ceramic mug
- A new dish towel
- Two bags of California shelled almonds

The idea behind this $69 purchase? I don't want to purchase anything else the rest of this week. Okay, maybe a cup of something on the weekend, but otherwise, I want to hermitize my existence. And the thing is of this $69, about $13 were one time purchases. I got the mug to drink the tea in, I got the towel to help dry out kitchenware that I'll use to cook additional meals in-home, and I also got a mini funnel to fill water bottles with (my gallon jugs have wide mouths).

Once I left Fuel, I walked back to the U District from Wallyworld, and originally planned to stop at Rams to print up the release form from my reference, sign in, scan it and e-mail it back... before I realized that UW has to have resources that will allow me to do it for far cheaper.

I went to ODEGAARD, found an open computer amidst a crowd (finals has the place packed), accessed my e-mail, printed the Word doc, logged off and walked all the way across campus to the Communications Building because whoever funds the Copy Center made a really stupid budget decision.

I get there, go through the awkward exchange that always results when you disclose that you walked all the way across campus to print one page, paid my $0.12 and took my copy. I asked the girl about scanning services and she said the Macs in ODEGAARD had scanners. Using a Mac is an adjustment but okay. I went out to the hallway, pressed the paper against a custodian's closet door and signed the paper. I went to put the paper away, and slipped out of my hand, fluttered around me, and right under the crack of the custodian's door and out of sight.

Not angry but otherwise flummoxed at the sprinkler system of karmic shit that fate likes to bring me, I walk back inside the copy center to the counter and somehow explain with a straight face that the one page I just printed somehow slipped out of my hand and underneath the custodian's closet door. We offer each other the requisite OH NOES and, telling me she can't unlock the door and she cannot reprint my doc, she does offer to let me use their network computer, conveniently located right next to the counter, to e-mail my file to their server e-mail, from which they could print it. After doing so and much waiting from their first-rate server, they printed my page, charged me another $0.12, and this time I made sure to put the damn paper in my bag before leaving. I would go ahead and sign it once I returned to ODEGAARD. There is the dim possibility that the janitor could take my signature and somehow use it for identity theft, but given that every janitor I've ever seen on campus was a white man or woman, I'm willing to take the chance that they just crumple my paper up, throw it in recycling and nothing comes of it.

I walk all the way back, get up to the 3rd floor, find an open Mac and try to interpret the hieroglyphics that is working with the Mac's interface as a PC user. Utilizing dim yet vivid memories of my Kinko's experience, I open up Photoshop and use the import function to scan my document to file, "printing" it as a PDF file to the server. I open up Firefox, access my e-mail, attach the PDF and send it to my reference. Given that job involved printing from a LOT of PDF files, I imagine he won't have any trouble opening it. I log off and head out the door.

How racist of me, I know, but what I hear is that Latinos like to swipe Latino IDs to facilitate personal business, or to help relatives who immigrate illegally. Not my take, but I give it credence.

you're ready for a snowstorm!

I'm pondering how to cut costs... but the guy from Spokane might move in after all... that's the biggest beans on my agenda. I dare fate to fuck with me again. My rent with this guy in would be $465/mo. Peanuts, but I'm still going into heavy marketing mode (which is simply daily marketing mode), cuz in Febrary MS CSG re-opens to me, and I want some fucking variety and competition in the offers I gather.
